Creating a Transparent GIF

3 - Start GIMP --> File --> Open --> Desktop --> Rodney.jpg (Rodney.jpg will be provided by instructor). View --> Zoom --> 2:1 Ratio. Click Scissors Icon called “select shapes from image” then click on an edge of the picture face. Continue to select the outline of the picture. See the inclass example. Click EXACTLY on the same spot you started. (Note how the cursor changes when you hover on the spot you started.) Click once inside the image, the outline you just created should change to the “marching ants” effect. Start over if you did not get this.

4 – In the picture, select Edit --> Copy. Then move to the GIMP tool. Select File --> New then Width = 750 Pixels, Height = 200 Pixels. Click Advanced --> Fill With --> Transparency --> OK. In the new window, Select Edit --> Paste. Use the Move Layer & Selection tool to move the picture to the far left. Next Click the Text Tool and click to the right of the photo. Type in “Rodney Dangerfield” then close. Change the Font Style to “Comic Sans MS”, change the color to Red and modify the font size to fit the entire gif.

5 - File --> Save --> rodney.gif to Desktop --> Export --> OK. The close GIMP. Create a file called rodney.htm on the Desktop. Specify the background-color option for the body tag to be yellow, then call rodney.gif within an img tag.

6 - View the result and change the bgcolor to other values. Show the instructor.

Creating an Animated GIF

7 – In Gimp File --> New --> 75 by 75 --> Advanced --> Transparent Background --> OK. Zoom 2:1 --> Select Elipital Region & Create a circle which fills most of the area. Double click foreground color & change to blue. Draw in Ink & fill in circle. File --> Save As --> ball1.gif on Desktop. Convert to Index --> OK.

8 – File --> New --> 700 Wide x 300 High --> Advanced --> Transparent Background --> OK. Select by Color Tool --> Select ball1.gif --> Edit --> Copy. Move to 700 x 300 and Edit --> Paste. Click on Move Layer and Selection Tool and move to upper right corner. Select Layer --> New Layer then Edit --> Paste. This should put a second copy of the ball right on top of the first. Use the Move Layer Tool to move it to the left and below the first ball. (Don’t worry if the second ball is not visible yet.)

9 - Repeat this process of Layer --> New Layer then Edit --> Paste then Move until you get something like the pattern below:

Gimp Image

10 - Select Layer --> New Layer then File --> Save As & call it movingball.xcf. Save it to the Desktop. Next in the xcf image, select Dialogs --> Layers and expand the resulting window.

11 - Select the first layer above the background layer near the bottom. Right click and choose Edit Layer Attribute. Rename this layer the following:

layer0(100ms)(replace)

Select pasted layer #1 and rename to:

layer1(100ms)(replace)

Repeat for all layers. Select Filters --> Animation --> Playback then Play. Change the value of (100ms) to shorter or longer values as desired. Use (combine) instead of (replace) to show the layer in the next frame. When you're done, click File --> Save As --> moveball.gif on Desktop. Save As Animation & convert to indexed --> Export.
