Custom Poses and Poseball Creation

1 - Download and install Qavimator from http://www.qavimator.org/

2 - Start Qavimator and select your Gender. The following keys change your view of the Avatar:

  • Shift + Mouse - Pans Camera view Up, Down, Left and Right
  • Ctrl + Mouse - Orbits Camera around Avatar
  • Mouse Scroll Wheel - Zoom In and Out
Test these controls out now.

3 - Every body part can be selected, either with the mouse or from the Edit Part pulldown menu. For each body part, there will be a rotation value for X, Y and Z. The position value is only applicable for the hip body section. Experiment around with changing these values to get a feel for how Qaviamtor works.

4 - To return to the initial starting point, Select File -> New, then click Yes to discard and changes made. Again, select your Gender, then make sure there is NOT a check next to Protect First Frame under Options. Select the Left Thigh and set the following values: X-Rotation = -90, Y-Rotation=0, Z-Rotation=0. This tutorial will use a shorthand notation in the future as follows to represent these values:

lThigh -90, 0, 0

Set the following values:

rThigh -90, 0, 0

lShin +90, 0, 0

rShin +90, 0, 0

5 - Use Ctrl + Mouse to view the Avatar from the side. Select the Hip and change the Y Position value so that the Avatars foot just touches the floor.

6 - Now that the Avatar is in a sitting position, let's put his hands behind his head. To do that, set the following body parts to the following positions:

Body PartX RotationY RotationZ Rotation
lCollar +10, -20, -30
rCollar +10, +20, +30
lShdlr -60, +70, +80
rShdlr -60, -70, -80
lForeArm -20, -100, +5
rForeArm +20, +100, -5
lHand -60, 0, 0
rHand -60, 0, 0

These are rough values for this position. Feel free to modify the values slightly to get a more "natural" pose with your avatars hands behind his head.

7 - Your Avatar should now look like the one in Figure 1. Down in the lower right corner, set the Frame box to read "Frame 0 of 1". Next Click File, then Save and call the new file sitpose1.bvh and save it to the Desktop. Close Qavimator.

8 - Login to Second Life, then select File, Upload Animation and select sitpose1.bvh from the Desktop. Under Name, put "Sit Pose 1" and under description, put "Sitting Pose by AVATAR NAME". Next, check the Loop box, set Hand Pose to "relaxed" and Expression to "Smile". Select Sitting for the Preview value, then press play to verify everything looks as expected. Once you are happy with your Avatar, Upload the Animation. Go to My Inventory -> Animation -> Poses. Click "Sit Pose 1", then Play In-World. Click Stop when finished.

9 - Next we are going to create a Poseball to allow anyone to use this pose without having it in their inventory. Go to a place where you have Build Permissions and create a 1m x 1m x 1m cube. Postion the cube on grid. Next, place a 1m x 1m x 1m sphere on top of the cube. Set the sphere texture to Blank, then set the color as desired. Typically, male poses are associated with blue spheres, female poses with pink spheres and gender neutral poses use any other colors.

10 - Edit the sphere and select Content. Click the New Script button, then erase the default script found there. Copy the Animate Ball script from the link below and paste it into the New Script area, then save the results.

Nyterave Anim8 Ball Script

Alternatively, this script can be found in the Poseball Folder at SLURL "West Sunset - 157, 7, 21" located under the Tutorial Supplies wall section.

11 - Change the "Sit Here" message to "Poseball by AVATAR NAME". Save the script. Next, drag "Sit Pose 1" from My Inventory -> Animation -> Poses to the sphere. Verify there are two scripts for the sphere under the Content tab.

12 - Right click the poseball and select "Sit Here". Most likely, your avatar will not be positioned as desired. To fix this, click the Poseball (it may not be visible, just click where it was positioned) and change the rotation and position values as desired. Once positioned correctly, change all the size values to 0.2 meters.

13 - Take a snapshot of yourself sitting on the Poseball, then have a classmates Avatar sit on your Poseball and take a snapshot. The photos should look like Figures 2 and 3. Turn in printouts of the snapshots.
